The Flying Stars System - Forms of Energy
In addition to being manifested in visible structures such as landforms and buildings, energy can also take invisible forms. Thus, feng-shui works not only with visible structures but also with the invisible energy of a particular place at a given time. Outdoors, energy roams free, but when a building is erected, it captures the energy of the space it occupies. This "encapsulated" energy has the following characteristics:
1. Two spatial dimensions, determined by the direction in which the front and the back of the building face.
2. One time dimension, determined by the year in which the building is completed.
Taken together, these three factors dictate the type of energy that resides in each part of the house. Using the principles of the pa-k'ua and the spatial and temporal dimensions of a building, the San-yüan and Hsüan-k'ung schools have come up with a method called the Flying Stars System that allows the practitioner to discover and evaluate the invisible energy residing in the building.
Using the Flying Stars System
The Flying Stars System is based on a 3 by 3 tic-tac-toe grid called the Nine Palaces. Each square on the grid contains three numbers, and when we superimpose the grid on the floor plan of a house, the numbers will tell us what kind of energy flows in each room. For instance, the box in the upper left-hand corner of the grid has the numbers 6, 1, and 4, which are associated with health, prosperity, and good fortune. If this square corresponds to the bedroom of our hypothetical house, then the bedroom is located in a spot with very positive energy.
The bedroom in the upper-right corner also has auspicious numbers, or stars--4, 8, and 6--all of them associated with positive energy. Now, look at the square directly below the one in the upper left-hand corner. This square has the numbers 5, 9, and 5. The number 5 is associated with illness, obstacles, and injuries. Therefore, the corresponding room, labeled "bathroom and storeroom," is inauspiciously located. Fortunately, because bathrooms and storerooms are parts of the house where people don't spend a large part of their time, the negative effects of such a placement will be minimal.
The Flying Star System is a powerful technique for evaluating the flow of invisible energy in a house. If you find unfavorable numbers in one bedroom, you can move into another bedroom with more favorable ones. Better yet, if you're designing a new house, the Flying Stars System allows you to place rooms critical to your health and prosperity (such as bedrooms, kitchen, home office) in areas corresponding to auspicious stars.
